Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of folk music brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity.
Grieg is most famous for his Piano Concerto in A minor, and for having written the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt, which includes the excerpts In the Hall of the Mountain King and Morning Mood. Later, he made this music into two orchestral suites.
Much loved by pianists are ten books of Lyric Pieces, in which he established his special kind of sound, closely related to various folksong arrangements he made, such as 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, four Norwegian Dances and 19 Norwegian Folk Songs.
From Monte Pincio contains Grieg’s and lyricist Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson’s elated memories of visits to one of Rome’s famous hills, most certainly in the company of other famous artists.
Rome was a favourite city for Nordic artists to visit. Usually, they were staying near Piazza Barberini and would be strolling in the evening past the Spanish Steps to the park at Pincio to sip their wine, look down at the bustling Piazza del Popolo from the protruding terrace and admire the glowing dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in the distance as the sun set.
This transcription adheres to Grieg’s orchestral arrangement in high key, although transposed from G♭ major to G major with vocal range being B3 to G5 (mezzo soprano).
The 1st Trumpet part should be played only when there is no singer. There is no 3rd Trumpet part. The Harp part is optional and cued in 2nd Flute.
