Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867–1942) was a Swedish composer and music critic. As a composer of works in a bigger format, his main musical influences were German composers, most of all Richard Wagner. However, he enjoyed more success with lesser works inspired mainly by the Swedish folk idiom.

In winter, he worked for many years as a dreaded newspaper critic in Stockholm. In summer, he spent most of his time at his summer house outside the town of Östersund in Northern Sweden, where he even staged his wiking drama ‘Arnljot’ on an outdoor stage every summer.

Peterson-Berger’s summer house is located on the island of Frösö. That is why ‘Flowers of Frösö’ (Frösöblomster) is the title of three volumes of piano pieces that he wrote.

Although he also wrote five symphonies, five operas and many songs, none of these has become as popular as the ‘Flowers of Frösö’. In particular, the pieces ‘Summer Song’ and ‘At Frösö Church’ are still much played, having been arranged for diverse ensembles.

The most popular pieces, including ‘Summer Song’, are found in Book I containing eight songs. The pieces in Books II & III tend to show less inventiveness and are performed less often.

The exception is ‘Entry into Sommarhagen’ from Book III. Sommarhagen (Summer Garden) is still the name of his summer house at Frösö. It is now a museum and a concert venue, open to visitors during the summer months.
