Hans Christian Lumbye (1810–1874) was a Danish composer of waltzes, polkas, mazurkas, and various other pieces for the Copenhagen Tivoli Garden , the huge amusement park that opened in 1843 in the heart of the Danish capital. It is one of the world’s oldest of its kind and attracts more than 4 million visitors every year.
Lumbye, being Tivoli Garden’s musical director from 1843 to 1872, was inspired by Viennese waltz composers such as the Strauss family, and became known as the ‘Strauss of the North’.
In his native country, he is fondly remembered for compositions such as Salute to August Bournonville (a ballet master), Britta Polka, Amelie Walz, Columbine Polka Mazurka (Harlequin’s mistress in pantomimes still performed daily at Tivoli Garden), as well as three royal honour marches.
Many of his works are still being performed by Tivoli’s own symphony orchestra, aka the Copenhagen Philharmonic (Sjællands Symfoniorkester). Some years ago, they recorded Lumbye’s collected orchestral works on the Marco Polo label, – filling 11 albums.
The Champagne Galop is one of Lumbye’s best-known works, starting and ending with the pop of a champagne cork, as well as featuring the xylophone to add to the cheerfulness. For this reason it is much performed at New Year’s concerts and has been included twice in the Vienna Philharmonic’s famous New Year’s Concerts in recent years.
