Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of folk music brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity.

Grieg is most famous for his Piano Concerto in A minor, and for having written the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt, which includes the excerpts In the Hall of the Mountain King and Morning Mood. Later, he made this music into two orchestral suites.

Much loved by pianists are ten books of Lyric Pieces, in which he established his special kind of sound, closely related to various folksong arrangements he made, such as 25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, four Norwegian Dances and 19 Norwegian Folk Songs.

At Rondane is a song about the mountainous region of Rondane in Eastern Norway, written in 1861 in New Norwegian language by the poet Aasmund Olavsson Vinje (1818–1870). In the poem, an old man reminisces about his childhood days in this region.

Grieg, being born in Bergen on the west coast, was fascinated by the new language compiled from west Norwegian dialects. It differed from Danish, commonly used in Norway at the time. He used only Vinje poems in 12 Songs, Op. 33, for voice and piano. No. 9 became popular in Norway. The concert band version is an arrangement of the original.

NOTE: The set of parts contains a solo trumpet part as an extra to be played when there is no singer.
