Luigi Denza (1846–1922) was an Italian composer, educated in Naples. Later, he moved to the UK, where he was appointed professor of singing at the Royal Academy of Music. He wrote the piece for which he became famous, the immensely popular tarantella-style ‘Funiculì, funiculà’ , in 1880 to celebrate the opening of the first funicular on Mount Vesuvius near Naples. It has ever since been a favourite of italianate tenors.
Carl Fisher published this arrangement by Louis-Philippe Laurendeau in 1911 with the addition of ‘Santa Lucia’, a barcarole which has not been included here since it is in a different style. Instead, the arrangement has been expanded with a section for brass instruments.
If a singer and possibly a choir will take part, some adaptation (e.g., repeats) might be needed if more than one verse is being sung.

In Carl Fisher’s edition the composer’s name was given as Chas. J. Roberts (a prolific U.S. arranger of orchestral pops), although it was well know at the time that Denza was indeed the composer, having won a lawsuit against Richard Strauss. Strauss had used the tune without permission in his tone poem ‘Aus Italien’, believing it to be a folksong.
